Start with the load, not the cabin

When choosing a freight elevator, the first question should be what load will move, how often and under what conditions. A factory moving pallets, a restaurant sending food between floors, a warehouse transferring cartons and an office building moving technical equipment all need different solutions. Capacity, cabin size, door type, stop count and drive system should follow the real use case.

Main freight elevator types

Capacity is not only about total weight. Load size, center of gravity, how the item enters the cabin, whether a pallet truck is used, the entry angle and the maneuvering area at each landing all matter. A light but long load can require a larger cabin and wider door than expected.

If pallet trucks or forklifts are part of the scenario, floor strength, thresholds and cabin flooring should be checked carefully. The cabin floor must withstand impact and wear, and there should be enough room for safe loading. A door that is too narrow or a landing with poor approach space can create damage and delay at every use.

Daily traffic is another factor. A freight elevator in a busy warehouse needs stronger attention to durability and service access. A less frequent technical-service lift may allow a different balance. The clearer the usage scenario, the better the final technical decision.

Loading habits should also be discussed. Will staff push the load in by hand, use a pallet truck, place weight on one side of the cabin or wait with goods in front of the door? These details affect cabin flooring, door safety and control behavior. When the business describes real use honestly, the elevator can be selected for durability instead of for a brochure scenario.

Hydraulic or traction?

A hydraulic freight elevator can be suitable for some heavy-load and controlled-movement applications, especially at lower or moderate travel distances. Machine placement, shaft dimensions, stop count and usage pattern all affect suitability. Traction systems may be stronger for different speed, travel or energy-efficiency needs. There is no universal answer.

Hydraulic systems require proper planning of the power unit, cylinder, oil lines and maintenance access. Traction systems bring the motor, brake, suspension and counterweight arrangement into focus. Machine-room-less solutions may also be considered in some buildings, but freight elevators require particular attention to service access and durability.

Selection should not be based on initial cost alone. Energy use, maintenance access, fault response, spare-part availability and long-term operating safety all belong in the decision. Routine elevator maintenance is what keeps a freight elevator from becoming a bottleneck in daily operations.

Factory, warehouse, restaurant and office scenarios

In factories, a freight elevator is often part of production flow. Durability, capacity, shift intensity and quick response during faults become critical. In warehouses, pallet movement, door width and landing space are often the main issues. In restaurants and hotels, dumbwaiters are judged by hygiene, quiet operation and service rhythm.

In business centers, the elevator may carry technical equipment, archive materials, furniture or service supplies. Goods traffic should not constantly damage or delay passenger elevators. Using a passenger elevator for heavy or frequent goods movement can damage the cabin, strain doors and reduce comfort for users.

User training is also part of the system. Capacity limits, goods-only restrictions, loading rules and fault procedures should be visible. A well-designed elevator can still become risky if it is used outside its intended purpose.

Businesses should also plan what happens during a stoppage. If the freight elevator is central to production or service flow, even a short outage can disrupt the schedule. The maintenance agreement should define communication and response for critical faults, and staff should know when to stop using the system rather than keep trying.

Safety and inspection apply to freight systems too

Freight elevators require regular checks of safety equipment, door locks, brakes, control circuits, overload protection and emergency stop functions. The idea that "it does not carry passengers" does not remove safety responsibility. Falling loads, door-zone risks, uncontrolled movement and misuse can all create serious workplace hazards.
